House of Haricot

Christel Boon, the surface designer behind House of Haricot, is based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. When she was little, she grew up near the coast, which was a big inspiration for her drawing, painting, and crafting. As a teenager, she took private art lessons for some years, learning to draw and paint with pastels, ink, watercolours, charcoal, and oil paint. She took her portfolio to apply for a graphic design degree and was accepted. After graduating in Graphic Design successfully, she continued to enrol in Art School and earned a degree as an engineer in Interaction Design. She worked as a creative designer and later as a creative director for national and international agencies and companies for quite some time until she started a new career as a Surface Designer at the end of 2019. In her work, you will find many nostalgic references to vintage design and childhood memories, but also nature, food, everyday life and travelling (mostly to Japan).

She says: ‘For me, as a designer, it is my goal to bring joy to the everyday life with my designs. When someone tells me they felt something looking at my design, or they had a happy memory because of it, I feel blessed.

Snakes In The Fantasy Flower Bush

Birds & Berries - 100% Cotton Shirt

Presented in a circular pattern, with birds and berries as the main elements, this print shows a peaceful natural scene: birds picking berries in the bushes, as if in a peaceful forest world. I designed it in soft, natural tones to create a sophisticated and minimalist atmosphere, perfect for a quiet vacation setting. The design is inspired by vintage block print fabrics with a warm nostalgic feel, while incorporating some lovely textures for a calm and cozy visual experience. The first color palette conveys the freshness and modernity of the “millennial aesthetic”, while I researched other shades to fit the serenity of a natural cabin getaway, ensuring that the overall design has a vintage aesthetic with a natural, serene vibe. Whether you're on vacation at the beach or in a mountain cabin, this shirt will bring a sense of peace and relaxation.

Nostalgic Floral Harmony - 100% Cotton Shirt

A harmonious blend of nostalgic flowers and color palettes. The design is inspired by my childhood memories of playing at my grandfather's slippery feet while he sat in front of the fireplace, leaning against his favorite armchair as he slept. To bring this cozy scene into the design, I added the chair's vintage fabric pattern to give it a slightly worn look, while treating it with a light background to add a modern and fresh vibe. The floral pattern is subtle and nostalgic, as if it carries the warmth and serenity of those times. A blend of classic and modern, this print is for the wearer who loves the vintage aesthetic and desires to blend the past with the present.

Snakes In The Fantasy Flower Bush - 100% Cotton Shirt

The main elements of this print are the pink snake and whimsical flowers, with the sun and moon motifs subtly incorporated on the snake to symbolize the balance of yin and yang and nature. The design is inspired by the upcoming Year of the Snake, but also by classic Indian floral motifs with a mystical and dreamy vibe. I used soft colors to create a calming, soothing piece that feels like being in a fantastical floral jungle, with flowers growing freely amidst the snake's entanglements, full of wonder and beauty. When painting these flowers, I like to let my imagination run wild and think about what kind of exotic flowers would grow in this fantasy world.
